plaaaato is a music project created by Kostiantyn Sakhin in 2020 in Zaporizhzhia. The project initially began as a lo-fi bedroom dream-pop experiment but gradually evolved into a louder and more saturated sound combining noisy shoegaze and slacker rock.
As Kostyantyn moved between cities, the sound of plaaaato also changed. Over time the music reflects a sense of growing up, new production approaches, and the search for a personal sonic language. After a period based in Kyiv, Kostiantyn is now working on the project from Warsaw. These changes in environment are also reflected in the evolution of the project’s atmosphere and sound.
The project balances between chaotic noise where meaning seems to dissolve and bright yet melancholic imagery, present both in the music and in its visual aesthetic.
Early releases reveal clear influences from classic shoegaze and dream-pop artists such as My Bloody Valentine, Astrobrite, Pale Saints and DIIV. Over time the sound has incorporated more electronic elements and techniques from different genres, shaping a more experimental and recognizable style that makes plaaaato stand out within the Ukrainian and European alternative scenes.
A new album, “BRIGHTDEADSTARR,” is expected to be released on April 10. According to Kostiantyn, it will be the last release from the project for some time, serving as a kind of summary of plaaaato’s sonic evolution.
